French President Francois Hollande after signing a cooperation agreement between the two major companies GDF Suez and ALSTOM announced the launch of major projects in the field of tidal energy.

Major French power and gas company GDF Suez and the French engineering company ALSTOM which is one of the leading manufacturers of power equipment, will be engaged in developing the tidal power in France. An agreement is signed between the enterprisesunder which ALSTOM offshore turbine which produces energy through currents, will be integrated into a GDF Suez pilot project, located in the city of Cherbourg. Thus, the companies hope to create a new industrial sector on producing clean energy by fluxes and refluxes which will make a significant contribution to the development of alternative energy in the country.

ALSTOM turbines complement the turbines from German production company VOITH which have been previously installed in the project site. This is one of the elements of another recently signed a cooperation agreement between the companies GDF Suez, VOITH, CMN, Cofely-Endel and ACE.Under this agreement, the algorithm of assembly and maintenance operation of the facility becomes formed.

The agreement, signed with ALSTOM, implies the promotion of ideas and plans of enterprisesto create a new marine energy sector in France where special emphasis is placed on the energy of the tides. It is planned that the new marine turbines will be put into operation in 2016.

It is notable that in the implementation of these projects, GDF Suez is positioning itself as one of the leading players on today’s current market of marine energy, having two major projects in this area in the French waters.

The territories of the coast of the Iberian Peninsula and in the region of the Finistere department in western France have the greatest potential in the field of tidal energy - About 80% of the available capacity of the tidal energy in the country is concentrated in them.

GDF Suez is already actively working in these territories and in the near future in addition to the above initiatives, it is also planned to start in the area of Finistère implementing a joint project with a local company SABELLA, engaged in the production of tidal turbines.

Currently SABELLA develops marine turbine D10, which will become a key target of the joint project. On account of GDF Suez has about 10,000 MW of installed capacity in France, more than 50% of which are renewable energy sources. In addition, GDF Suez is the second largest energy producer in France using HPP, with 3800 MW of installed capacityin this sector today.
