I’m sure many of you have heard of desire for a Japanese company (a desire, however, it is not only expressed it) to build a space elevator on the basis of strong carbon nanotubes. Now, the latest news sounds even more interesting. In theory, a space elevator could be built of diamonds.
Graphene can, and is, in recent years one of the most interesting materials for science, but the scientific community has turned its attention to other material, which is based on carbon. We are talking about the diamond nanowires created on the basis of one-dimensional carbon crystals strength comparable to diamond.
In fairness it should be noted immediately that scientists have yet to within not sure deserve any diamond nanowires such attention, which he is now on, and, in general, is it possible to establish a mass production, however, interested in them at least one Laboratory of the University of Pennsylvania (USA), which is currently working with them. At the moment, there are concerns that the diamond nanowire with an increase in size may become more brittle, which, of course, can be a very pressing problem, when it comes to broaching Outer cable length of at least 20 kilometers.
